Over the years, I have joked that John 16:33 is my least favorite “promise of God”. Usually we all love God’s promises! But in John 16:33, Jesus promises us that we will have trouble in our lives! Let’s take a look:
33 “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world
you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” John 16:33 NIV
For most of us, simply thinking about our day or turning on the news will prove this verse. We face personal troubles along with trouble in our families, communities and all over the world. But here are a couple of ways we can gain strength and guidance from this verse:
1) God will give us peace.
Jesus is honest about reality, but clearly tells us that we can have peace even in the midst of a world that has many troubles. (also see Philippians 4:7)
2) We will experience trouble.
Nobody likes this reality but it’s something we all must face. It’s not a matter of if we will have trouble, it’s a matter of when. This should help us prepare spiritually, emotionally and naturally for when trouble appears. I remember when I was growing up, another boy told me we were going to fight, so guess what – I got ready! We must be ready for troubles.
3) Jesus will help us overcome the world and its troubles.
Overcoming troubles and winning life’s fights must be intentional. Since Jesus is the one who overcame the world, it is through walking with Him that we overcome troubles. Here are a couple of things you can do to be victorious over life’s troubles.
- Purposely walk with Jesus each day – in thought, deed and prayer throughout the day
- Daily Quiet time – spend 15-30 minutes daily reading God’s Word and in prayer
- Worship – in your quiet time, throughout the day and in Church with other believers
- Be in relationship with other strong believers to help you overcome
It is through relationship with Christ and other believers that you will be strengthened and encouraged to overcome this world’s troubles! If you want more, we have a conference for you.
Upcoming Conference: Navigating Troublesome Times
We will be hosting a leadership conference to train Youth Leaders on how they can help teens in their churches and communities face and overcome challenges they face. There will also be workshops directly for teens. We would love for you to come and grow in overcoming life’s troubles!
